The cutaneous biopsy is a procedure by means of which a tissue sample is harvested, which shall subsequently be examined under the optical microscope by an anatomic-pathologist medical professional in order to set a diagnosis.

Biopsy is necessary in the following situations:
The clinical aspect of the affliction is inconclusive or needs confirmation (psoriasis, dermatitis)
Setting the malignant or benign nature of the cutaneous lesions under suspicion
The cutaneous biopsy can have several forms:
Punch biopsy (collecting a circular skin fragment by means of a special scalpel called a punch)
Excisional or incisional biopsy
The results of a biopsy are available within approximately 10 days.
