The 2nd trimester fetal morphology is an ultrasound performed during the weeks 19 to 22 of pregnancy, which analyses the fetus and the mother’s uterus. By means of this ultrasound, we can obtain information about the development status of the baby, the status of the placenta and of the amniotic fluid, the appearance of the umbilical cord and each individual organ, so as to exclude the possibility of an affliction in the baby or of a pregnancy complication.

The operator verifies whether the fetus is undergoing a normal development and which is the position of the placenta inside the uterus. The main purpose of this ultrasound is to verify the normal development of the fetus and not the gender.
The investigation is performed in the second trimester of pregnancy, as at this stage the fetus is big enough to perform a clear evaluation of the body structure and its development. The ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to see and register in real time certain images on the screen through ultrasounds. As such, the morphological ultrasound is an ideal method to observe the baby’s movements.
