The cutaneous biopsy is a procedure by means of which a tissue sample is harvested, which shall subsequently be examined under the optical microscope by an anatomic-pathologist medical professional in order to set a diagnosis.

Biopsy is necessary in the following situations:
- The clinical aspect of the affliction is inconclusive or needs confirmation (psoriasis, dermatitis)
- Setting the malignant or benign nature of the cutaneous lesions under suspicion
The cutaneous biopsy can have several forms:
- Shave excision
- Punch biopsy (collecting a circular skin fragment by means of a special scalpel called a punch)
- Excisional or incisional biopsy
The results of a biopsy are available within approximately 10 days.
