Colposcopy is a non-invasive gynaecological procedure by means of which the gynaecologist examines directly the cervix, the vagina and the vulva. This procedure is performed by means of a device called a colposcope, endowed with a video camera and a source of light. During the examination, the colposcope does not have direct contact with the genital organs.

The image which the doctor sees and analyses is highly enlarged, so that the diagnosis can be made more precisely. The video-colposcope allows the patient to see the examination in real time, while the doctor can explain the modifications observed. For this reason, especially in the cases where no surgical treatment (biopsy, excision of lesions) is needed, but a follow-up is required, the patient can see directly on the screen, during the follow-up examinations, the way in which the affliction improves.
