Dental cavities appear due to certain factors, such as:
- Acids produced by bacteria which affect the teeth enamel
- A precarious dental hygiene
- An incorrect teeth cleaning
- An erratic eating pattern which enables food to stick to the teeth
- Smoking which lowers protection against the acids attacking the teeth (cigarette smoke lowers the production of saliva which acts as a sponge, cleaning the food residues from the teeth)
Symptoms of a dental cavity:
- Dental aches
- Sensitivity to sweet, hot or cold taste
- Bad breath
- Black colorations on teeth
Dental cavities can be prevented by: using dental floss and mouthwash regularly, cleaning the teeth at home and professionally, regular dental check-ups, avoiding products high in sugar. Most of the times, the symptoms of a cavity do not appear immediately, but when it is already in an advanced stage. Postponing the treatment of a dental cavity can usually lead to dental infections involving the loss of the tooth.
The cavity treatment consists in totally removing the cavity, covering the healthy dental tissues with state-of-the-art materials in order to isolate them from temperature variations and reconstructing the tooth (by filling), which has an aesthetic and masticatory role.
